Another video of alleged excessive use of force by a police officer has made its way onto social media. This incident is said to have happened in San Pedro over the weekend. The video itself is only 11 seconds, but contains obscenities and violence with a firearm, perpetuated by the officer.
We note that there is no indication of what may have transpired before or after the video, but those few seconds were enough for the cop to be condemned in the public eye. Courtney Menzies has a closer look at the video.
Police Officer
"Kneel down, kneel obscenity down."
This video shows a short clip of a Sergeant Devon Makin kicking and pistol whipping a civilian who, at that moment, does not seem to be resisting arrest. While there is no video of what may have led to the cop's actions, he also curses at the detainee.
In the background, those recording the video can be heard:
Police Officer
"Noh play with me!."
Witness
"Make we video this."
Police Officer
"Kneel obscenity down."
Once Makin realizes he is being captured on camera, he takes a menacing step forward and yells at the person behind the camera.
Police Officer
"Bwai, noh dih video me, noh dih video me!"
And while there is no context that led to this detention, some media reports are that the suspect was armed.
Still, if that were so, then the officer turns his attention away from an allegedly armed man to focus on the person with the cellphone capturing the incident - which is not a crime.
Once the video made its rounds on social media, and the cop received criticism from court of public opinion, he issued his own statement saying quote, "Everybody knows me, I'm a very cool person, but don't get me the next side. Police got shot the other day and nobody said anything. Another mother cried, another son buried. I'm sorry, I will do my job the way I think it's best for me to stay safe. Let them say whatever they want to say." End quote.
The department has yet to issue a statement on this incident.
Sergeant Makin is the son of two police officers, one whom is recently retired.
