A high Court jury has found Police officer, Jairo Daniel Amador guilty of extortion. The incident occurred on October 1st, 2022, when a Canadian tourist and her husband were stopped at a checkpoint near Hattieville. Amador allegedly claimed their rental vehicle had expired insurance and threatened to jail the woman until Monday unless she made a "donation" of $100. She handed him money, which was later found hidden in Amador's gun holster.
Amador initially gave conflicting accounts, stating he found the bill by a lamppost and then later he said it was in the bushes, before eventually confessing to taking the money from the tourist. Still, he maintained his innocence in court, but the Canadian tourist and six other witnesses gave testimonies that led to his conviction.
He was remanded to prison pending sentencing set for November 25, 2024 before Justice Derick Sylvester.
