On the afternoon and evening of 20th April, the Belcan Bridge was the staging ground for an historic afternoon and evening of sit-in's, protest and showdowns between police and students best captured in this testy exchange of hostilities between 19-year-old sixth form student Nazima Reyes and Senior Superintendent Crispin Jeffries. And while the memory of that image and those far more ominous ones that unfolded after that, have been permanently inscribed in the nation's collective memory, the Belcan Bridge, it seems, is moving on. The four way folks at the Rotary Club of Belize have taken on the bridge as a project and painted it deep green and bright yellow. If the colors seem a little jarring, they may be: those are the Police Department's colors and you don't have to read too far between the brush strokes to conclude that it sends a not-too subtle message: that this one time ground zero is now 100% police friendly territory.
