Yesterday we showed you the gifts that the Police Zone Beat Liaison Office had collected for the communities it serves. Well today the cops played Santa with those gifts. We followed as they made their stops at some of the roughest neighborhoods in the city where the sound of the police is usually the sound of the beast, but today it was more like sleigh bells ringing.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
A truckload of Babylon was out today in some of the hottest spots of Belize City. They were on special operations but unlike the ones where m-16's are toted freely, these officers were playing Santa. The guns were replaced with toys and the general harassment of their jobs was replaced with goodwill and boxes of groceries. Single mother of 4 Denise Bennett says today=s call was totally unexpected.
Denise Bennett,
"I wasn't expecting this. I am glad and very grateful 'cause it made my children happy."
Also happy with the toys and groceries is Elena Silva, she says her husband is currently unemployed and this gesture made Christmas that much more special for her.
Elena Silva,
"Right now my husband isn't working okay and so it is much better."
Denise Bennett,
"I am single mother and I have four children and I have four children and I was just getting some stuff from other people that gave to me for the kids and that is what helps me a lot. It helps me a lot. It makes a lot more special for me."
Elena Silva,
"I appreciate it very much and I thank God for it."
And that is all these officers of the community policing unit were expecting today as they moved on to deliver these toys and groceries in areas that would ordinarily see them in a completely different light.
This is the third year that the Community policing unit has been doing its toy and food drive.
