There is a Kriol dictionary, Kriol storybooks, and a Kriol translation of the New Testament and now you can add to that list, Kriol gospel music. That's right, this week the Belize Kriol Project released a CD with 13 Kriol gospel songs. It's called "Gaad put a new song inna mi mouth." The songs are all original and were composed in January of 2006 when ethnomusicologist Jo-Ann Richards came to Belize. 10 local artists are featured and the songs were recorded at Ludwig Studios. Yvette Herrera and Silvana Woods say God understands Kriol.
Yvette Herrera,
"It is real grassroots Creole, brokdong, a little punta sound. The purpose of this CD is to make you have Creole songs, Creole Christian music, gospel music so that the churches can use it, the schools can use it, the Bible clubs can use it, Sunday school, and all that. We are quite proud of it because a lot was put into it and those of us have no skills in composing but we put our heads together and this is the finished product."
Silvana Woods, Belize Kriol Project
"What really like with this CD, it really shows that when you talk and pray in Kriol, God is listening to you. God listens to you in your language. You can talk with the language of your heart, you can sing with the language of your heart."
The CD is on sale for $15 at Bible Society Bookstore on Central American Boulevard.
