If you’ve gotten to see this last story on the news tonight, and it’s say, 8-ish, you’ll know that the general election 2008 may go on the record as having witnessed the greatest political overstatement. And in that climate, it’s hard for any ad, any billboard or any poster to stand out. But one thing that still stands out is the imposing larger than life flag at the entrance to Belama Phase One. It’s 45 feet long by 30 feet high, bigger than a bungalow house. And yesterday one went up in Central Park Orange Walk Town. One of the flag raisers is Roger Espejo and he told us why so big.

Roger Espejo,
“It was the idea of some supporters of the party from Belize City and they thought about it and they turned it into a reality in Belize and they decided to bring some of that ingenuity to Orange Walk as well. The significance of it has more to do with the logic, the logistics behind it of getting the material, it is not easy to find that amount of material in three specific colors in the same amount. And as well as the crane holding it up as a flagpole and that kind of thing. It is forty feet by thirty feet, not symbolic of anything actually but they just wanted to make a big flag and that’s what they did.”

We understand there are also plans to put up a similar flag in Cayo.
