It may have started as a society only for poets but now the group is expanding its membership to include Belizean writers. They’re mixing poetry and prose – which critics will say is like oil and water – but today the press was invited to hear all about how the Belizean Writers and Poets Society will gel. According to its Director of Operations and poet Kalilah Enriquez, although they’ve only been around for 3 years, the group already has one hundred registered members and that number is expected to increase with the expansion. Enriquez says the inclusion will also help to better to protect the works of members.

Kalilah Enriquez, Director of Operations – BWAPS
“Because across the region, across the Caribbean there are similar organizations that represent not only poets but writers and for them to be able to protect writers, they have to be able to do that across the board and not just for one specialized group of persons and so following that reasoning, that’s another reason why we decided to expand to include writers to make ourselves more powerful as a body.

It will be a great thing for them and for us and it will be of both mutual interests for both parties. For us to have the inclusion of writers, persons who are like minded who do think in the same way that poets think, they think in the literary sense, they think in the figurative sense, they enjoy symbolism, they enjoy reading. They enjoy the same things, they have the same interests and so we decided to come together and now invite them to be a part of the society.”

BWAPS which is a non profit non governmental organization will be officially launched during a special ceremony on Thursday.
