But more than just history, Gales Point has a hand on the pulse of the future.
After all, emancipation day is ultimately about what the descendants of enslaved people have since managed to achieve.
Case in point, the girl from Gales Point Manatee, in years to come she might be called Belize's first international actress.
And that's because Indira Andrewin defied all odds when she walked the red carpet at the Venice film festival to have her very first moment in in the sun of stardom. She told us about it this morning on SunUp on 7.
Indira Andrewin, Actress
"Yeah so it feels really good to just be an example of somebody that, I think and I'm not sure if there are other Belizeans that have been on Netflix but I feel very honored to be one of the first and to set an example that things like this are possible for other people, and for other Belizeans. I went to Venice which is the second biggest film festival."
Reporter:
"How was that, that was insane to be in another country and to see all these italians cheer you on and ask for autographs, just to be a star in a different county. I mean a girl from Gales Pointe."
Indira Andrewin, Actress
"There is so much complexity, if you are really into culture there is a strong culture factor, there is."
"It sheds light on nature, exploitation, the exploitation of nature, on the exploitation of women on colonialism, a lot of people just watch it and they don't understand so you really have to already have some sort of background and educate yourself on the subjects and the Mayan myth."
"It wasn't until way after Venice that I got the news that I would be on Netflix and I had to keep it a secret and I was like oh my gosh I can't wait for everyone to find out. And now that it's on Netflix you know I always think that nobody knows me and I'm walking down the street and people are like hey you are the girl from the movie and I'm like wait I was in a movie."
"Right now I'm actually reading a script for a really amazing film about the Haitian revolution. So we'll see what happens with that."
And Andrewin says that her experience making the film came full circle when she learned that her grandfather was a chiclero. "Selva Tragica" is streaming now on Netflix.
