Earlier in the news, we told you about a fire that destroyed a home in Belize City. Amidst the chaos, last night's fire victims were pleasantly surprised that it was a woman firefighter that came to their aid, especially since the field is a male dominated one. We asked Station Supervisor Kenneth Mortis about this today, and he said that the force is growing, not only with more men, but also with more women.

Kenneth Mortis, Fire Station Supervisor

"Last night we had one female firefighter. She is one in the Belize City directly attached to the Marion Jones. The National Fire Service currently has five female firefighters of varying ranks. As it is the supervisor for the Belize City Marion Jones Branch is a female of 25 plus years. We have two attached to Ladyville and then one attached to the San Pedro formation."

"So currently we have five. And as you may or may not have known, we recently conducted or concluded our first intake for 2024. And amongst those 27 firefighters, one of them is a female currently attached to the Corozal formation. So we are growing in terms of sex-wise, it's no longer a male orientated department and we welcome those females who feel like they have what it takes to put the men to the test."

"I mean, when you think that sometimes a man will outshine a woman and certain field of work it's vice versa, you know, so we're growing and we're evolving and we're only seeing better things to come for the fire department in the near future."
