A coaches training program for teachers opened yesterday. The one week program is being held to provide primary and secondary school teachers with effective coaching techniques in the various sport disciplines which include basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field, and football. Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Francis Fonseca opened the training yesterday describing it as a coaches training program for Belizeans by Belizeans.

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Sports
“We’ve been talking about it at the National Sports Council and certainly discussing it for a long time and I am very very happy that we have been able to reach this point where today we are officially launching the first coaching certification program which will be taught for Belizeans by Belizeans from Toledo to Stann Creek throughout the country from primary and secondary schools. All of you as teachers have worked with young people at the primary or at the secondary level who you know have tremendous potential; you see in them the ability to perhaps reach the stars. But obviously there is no easy road to accomplishing that goal, there is road for us taking the raw material of a young person in Belize at the primary level or at the secondary level and developing that raw material so that the young person male or female then becomes truly the best athlete that they can become. To reach there that individual needs help and they equipment and facilities.”

At yesterday's opening Sports Minister Fonseca accepted a donation of softballs, basketballs, footballs, volleyballs, bats, javelins, stop watches and other equipment from UNESCO representative in Belize Theresita Levy.
