Today was bring your pet to school day at St. Luke's Methodist Primary. The infant two class at the primary school held a pet show which added a whole new dimension to science. Keith Swift was invited to the show and has a report.

Keith Swift Reporting,
Chickens, turtle, dogs, cats, and pigs: Infant 2 students at St. Luke Primary school have been learning about them for weeks in science class. Today it was like those animals jumped from the pages of the books to their schoolyard in a virtual zoo. Teacher Danika Garnett says that was the idea.

Danika Garnett, Teacher
“We taught them about wild and tame animals, the uses of animals, and the basic needs of animals. So we asked the children from our class to bring in different pets that they own at home or whatever animal they can bring so that we can have this presentation here today. Seeing it real and having it in front of them they will remember and realize what the uses are for and right here the uses came out and the types of food they eat and the basic needs. For instance we have the pig here today who is giving us a lot of trouble and from time to time I would go and rub its head to cool it off so they see where the love comes in and so on.”

And though the pig was as wild as it got, the students enjoyed their real life science lesson and of course showing off like Jamilo with his rabbit, Afeni with her cat, and Ashley with her chicken – though the star of the show was the pig.

Kathleen Grant, Vice-Principal
“This gives the children, especially the city children, an opportunity to see some animals in reality because you would be surprised to know that some of these children have never seen a real pig.”

The school plans to make the event annual.
