Teachers returned to their classes at Escuela Tecnica Segundaria Mexico in San Roman Village this morning. That ended a two day sick out where 95% of the teachers called in sick and students had to be sent home. But that's over now. Classes resumed as normal today and keeping a very vigilant watch on the proceedings outside were parents who assembled to stage a protest. But that wasn't necessary and one parent, Liz Romero told us that is because they got some very good news.
Liz Romero, Parent
“Well we came here to support our teachers. It is not a big crowd and we understand because it is a working day but we’ve had signatures from the parents where they are supporting us. So far we’ve just received a favorable news from the Minister. We want to thank him as well. We’re still going to wait until ten o’clock and see what happens. But so far we’ve accomplished what we didn’t think we would accomplish today.”
Fortunato Noble, Channel 10
“So the Minister’s actions as of last night has diffused your protest?
Liz Romero,
“Yes,”
After waiting around until 10 am the parents went home satisfied that all had been suitably resolved. Of course it is only a temporary truce as information to us is that teachers have only agreed to go back to school until the end of this week pending the suspension of principal Juanita Lucas. The matter has been taken out of the hands of the school's board of directors and in the hands of the Ministry of Education which is considering its options.
