There was a book fair at the Leo Bradley Library this morning. Its part of the ongoing battle to get kids interested in reading in the mass media era where television and the internet are destroying their attention span and erasing the memory of what a good page turner really is. Shauna Rowland told us that the book fair featured games that would defeat the notion that reading is boring.
Shauna Rowland,
“The importance is to promote reading, reading is essential and today we have invited all the schools to participate and have reading activities and reading games. They could come in and go to the different areas in the library where they could play different games. We have the Library Lingo, in each area we have different games but that is one of the games.”
Jules Vasquez,
Do you think you will get any converts from events, when you’re having your games in there, having your reading out here? Do you see eyes light up in a way that TV could never make them light up?
Shauna Rowland,
“Very much so, very much so. Here we have children that for the story telling, they write their own stories and they read it and from that they win prizes as well.”
