While much discussion has taken place on the consent order involving the Maya Land Rights tenure policy - there's still widespread ignorance about the tru facts of the order. This morning on SUNUP a Maya Culture Promoter, Juan Caal appeared to breakdown what exactly the consent order is, and the role it plays in the case.
Juan Cal, Maya Culture Promoter
"The consent order, like we all know what is consent? It is important to understand that it means that we come together because we want this thing to happen, in a Kruffy language so forgive me if I give you it in a Kruffy style because I think that's the way people will want to understand right because then consent means you know we drag the government into court we went all the way to the CCJ you know everything that they had to bring to litigate the case, evidence provided they even said we aren't Mayas I think Dr Awe said that one of the witness in the government side so all of that had been quashed out so we aren't going back there again we done pass all of that now it's the consent order that needs to be implemented there are certain things in order if you had a chance to read it Renata and Brandon you would see that it is very specific. It doesn't say that the government will be just abandoning the ship, it has to be working together to implement this order that's why it's called a consent order."
"I think that is a misleading comment a lot of Belizeans or a lot of people make about the topic because we don't want all of Toledo that's for sure. The consent order is saying to go and identify where are those lands demarcate them and the faster this gets done we will know what all is left to be national land or crown land as we know it."
