The Placencia Lagoon is perhaps one of the leading inland destinations for overnight tourists. It is also in close proximity to 5 shrimp farms and boasts a growing population. So it is with good Reason and concern the Coastal Zone Management authority and Institute launched Placencia lagoon study in 2001.

Its objective was to study the lagoon's delicate ecosystem and two years later they presented their results. Oceanographer Eugene Ariola gave the Placencia Lagoon a clean bill of health.

Eugene Ariola, Oceanographer
In 2001 we started to collect data in the dry season of the Placencia lagoon and also in the dry season of 2003. The dissolved oxygen level showed that the health was well within what we call healthy. We conclude the Placencia lagoon is a healthy environment.

We also know they are some risks that exist for the lagoon. If we have a case where we introduce more nutrients. If tourism introduces too much solid and liquid waste that can impact the lagoon.

Today's presentation is part of CZMAI's scientific research presentation series.
