When the grenade went off in May on Mayflower Street – it cast a terrible light on an already bad neighbourhood. But the community’s leaders are determined to make a quiet comeback. After the media hype subsided – the community with the assistance of the CYDP started cleaning up the area. And now they’re filling up the area – because the alleys between Mayflowers and Bank Street are a disaster when it rains. Today they got the donation of 8 loads of sand and Annette Gentle of the Mothers in Action group which has been working in the area told us why every load makes a difference.

“Every time we get rain the whole place get flood and the whole entire neighbourhood gets flood and that is the problem we have back here. That is the first problem so we need some filling to the back here. So far it doesn’t look too good but at least we made a start and then we still need more because the place right now is still flooded so we need the sand and we need some stones afterwards. We are trying to clean up our community and make a better environment for the children and for all of us too.
It is very important because now when you represent yourself as coming from Mayflower, everybody minds change because they class this as a bad neighbourhood and we are trying to change that. That is what we are trying to change so we really need some help from anybody who is willing to help because we are working together as one.”
