Earlier this week we shared more details on the latest proposed development on Turneffe atoll, which sparked a number of concerns with critics in conservation circles. One of the concerns highlighted by the critics was the lack of public consultations and discussions, when a public hearing was initially set for July 18th. In addition to this and other factors including the approach of hurricane Beryl, critics believed that this would not be sufficient time to revise a 300 page EIA.
That's why the DOE issued a release today proposing a new date for the hearing. The release states, quote, "considering the national preparation for a high state of readiness related to Hurricane Beryl, and the request made by key stakeholders, the Department has decided to extend the date of submission of comments on the EIA report for one week. Therefore, the NEW date for the public to submit their comments in writing is on or before July 24, 2024".
