And while Belize is urging its partners to invest in the green transition - over in the United States they are going in the other direction - we asked the PM about that:
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"They did what they had to do to the environment so they could develop their economies, but yet they don't want us to do likewise. While I do not subscribe to that, my point has been from the time when I was a minister of Natural Resources and Environment in the Musa government, I was always telling them, we are prepared to do so, but help us, pay us to be able to protect it."
"And I guess that I believe that now more and more I think, our developing partners, being more conscious of the challenges that small states like Belize face. And then when they see Belize, a country like Belize that is working towards achieving those, those goals that they have, those goals that they want to see, that this green transition, they see that we have a plan."
"They see that we are determined, they we still have the discipline to get it done and that we're moving in that direction. I believe that the more and more they're prepared to assist us, and to work with us."
Jules Vasquez
"Is it going out of step with the hemispheric alignment which is pushed by the US, which is just like fossil fuels, carbon emission? We don't care."
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well, yeah, that that may be so, but, fortunately, they have a limited life, you know, that I'm hoping that that government or those policies will be able to change in the next three years or so. But more than that, we have to look beyond three years. We have to look beyond ten years and know that we have to make the right take the right positions, for instance, protecting our coastline, you know, the the, the Barrier Reef, the, the, the, the, the mangrove forests that we have helped to protect us."
