INTERPOL Belize has issued an alert to all formations following the theft of a chlorine gas cylinder in Mexico, described as a high-risk public safety concern. According to an internal police message circulated today, INTERPOL Mexico received a bulletin from Mexican authorities reporting the theft. The stolen cylinder contains chlorine gas, and was stolen from a well in Michoacán, Mexico. According to experts locally, chlorine gas has very limited demand in Belize and is only imported on special order, mainly for use by shrimp farms and for disinfecting surfaces in food processing. While chlorine gas is hazardous and can cause respiratory failure, it is not something that commonly circulates locally and should not be handled casually.
