A 13-year-old boy, looking for alternative education in Belmopan has been laid up in the hospital for the past 11 days. Rosendo Choc a resident of Carmelita Village in Orange Walk experienced pain in the lower part of his body on Monday of last week and since then, he's been in the hospital trying to recover. Thing is, the medical attention he needs is not available in Belize. He is suffering from Gillian Barre Syndrome and is in need of a prohibitively costly medical procedure. I visited him today at the KHMH and found out that this is no ordinary medical misfortune.
Matilda Choc, Mother
"He was getting training at the 4H center and it is right there it happened."
Alfonso Noble,
So what did they call and tell you?
Matilda Choc,
"They told me my son is in the hospital in Belmopan because he can't walk and he has pain. The doctor says they don't have any medicine here, they don't have the treatment in this country."
Alfonso Noble,
What are you expecting?
Matilda Choc,
"Outside has the treatment and it costs $25,000. I want to ask for help, a little donation to try and help my son because the doctor says that if he doesn't get it, he won't get better."
Rosendo Choc, Paralyzed
"The first day I got the pain and I could have walked a little bit and then I went to hospital. They sent me home and I didn't get any treatment or anything. Then I went to sleep and the Tuesday when I got up, I just dropped because I couldn't walk. I can move my hands."
Alfonso Noble,
What were you studying at school?
Rosendo Choc,
"I did building technology."
Alfonso Noble,
You think you'll be back to school?
Rosendo Choc,
"I want to go back to school."
