It is estimated that forty thousand Belizeans are living with diabetes, a health condition that has resulted in too many amputations due to complications and other problems. The norm is that when a patient has been diagnosed as a diabetic he or she is then put on either a strict diet or prescribed pills or insulin to help control their sugar levels. But controlling diabetes is easier said than done and most diabetics will confess that they face a daily challenge. This week a new clinic service promises to bring relief to those in pain. It is called anondyne therapy and for thirty five dollars per session they can get a high tech treatment. According to Gary Ayuso who has been trained as an anodyone technician, it could make the difference for diabetes sufferers.

“This is our first week of real operation. We have been in process, we first had to get license from the Ministry of Health and all that. So all that we were working on. This week they came and they granted us our license so we opened up our clinic for the first time this week.

What the anodyone does is it is infrared light that penetrates five centimeters within the body. This allows the body to release nitrous oxide which is similar to manmade morphine. So it is used as a very good form of pain management, chronic pain management and what it also does is create immediate circulation within the body.

Therefore a patient would have a diabetic wound and you could probably pump a thousand milligrams of antibiotics within the system and because it is not reaching the area, the healing process cannot start. This machine creates that circulation which allows the healing process.”

The anondyne therapy takes no more than forty minutes. It is situated at number seventy Cemetery Road in the same building as First Choice Pharmacy.
