Tonight 8 year old Moises Acertuna is on a ventilator. As we told you last night – he underwent a 6 hour surgery yesterday at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Surgeons attempted to surgically repair his digestive tract which was ruptured in a traffic accident in January. This picture sent to us by Rev. Tim Tam from Word at Work Ministries was taken shortly after the surgery was completed last night.
The doctors connected Moises’s intestines and his abdominal muscles were sewn back. But it may have been sewn too tight because late word from Texas is that Moises had some complications and at midday he was placed on a ventilator. Doctors plan to unstitch his stomach to create more room for his lungs and kidneys. The follow up procedure should take an hour and is considered a minor setback.
If all goes as planned, within ten days his stomach will be sown back and that’s when Moises may be able to restart eating again. It is a breakthrough because since the accident in January, Moises has been unable to eat.
He has told Rev. Tim Tam that the first thing he wants to eat when he recovers is food from a Mexican Restaurant in Texas. We’ll keep tracking his progress.
