Last week we confirmed 5 cases of swine flu, but tonight the number of confirmed cases has jumped to 15. Although it took a while, the A H1N1 virus is here and now with an inevitable increase in numbers, seems we'll just have to live with it. The Ministry of Health is currently awaiting the result of 22 samples that were sent to CAREC. All confirmed cases are from the Corozal district and are linked to the Corozal free zone. These people have shown mild flu-like symptoms, and have all recovered after quarantine.
Right now, the Ministry is waiting on the results of twenty two samples which are being tested at CAREC in Trinidad. The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and to educate people throughout the country on measures necessary to prevent being infected. The public is advised to wash hands frequently, use tissue when coughing or sneezing, clean surfaces such as doorknobs and counters with disinfectant. If anyone has flu-like symptoms they are asked to please visit the nearest health care center.
Also, you are reminded that limiting mass gatherings and travel plans is not necessary at this point.
