Lorraine Thompson, Technical Advisor – PAHO
“If we do not institute good quality of care and ensure good management and control of the diabetes then we are going to get a lot of complications in the near future. We are already seeing a lot of complications that result from diabetes which include kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage which result in amputation. The focus of the workshop over the next two days is to work with healthcare professionals all over the country for them to assess their quality of care as it stands now and we are going to be using a tool called the Chronic Care Model that they can use to look at their settings and go back and improve the quality of care to make sure that they patients, when they present themselves at their health facilities, they get the proper care that they need to manage their blood sugar, manage their blood pressure, good foot care and all the other things we are promoting in terms of healthy lifestyles.”
The workshop ends tomorrow.
