Tonight a Cayo couple is grieving for their lost newborn. The child of Marty and Mariela Tzib only lived a few hours at the San Ignacio Community hospital.
The San Antonio couple went to the San Ignacio Community Hospital on Monday morning at 1:30 to deliver their child.
The baby girl was born at about 8:00 that morning, but by the afternoon she was dead.
We today met grieving father Marty Tzib at the KHMH where a post mortem had just been conducted on the newborn:
Marty Tzib, Father of the deceased baby
"My wife told me that she was in there by herself, and she was having a lot of pain, only because she went and called the nurses to attend to her. By that time the baby was ready to be born, and they didn't pay any attention to her. They don't love their job. When we went to see her at 6 o'clock, they told us that she was okay, and when I went back at 10 o'clock, the nurse came and told me that the baby was already born, alright. And they told me that the baby's healthy; the baby's okay only because it swallowed some of its feces. And they told that they were going to transport the baby to Belize City at 9 o'clock - the baby born at 9 o'clock. And I didn't see any action, you know. I think it's careless conduct; I went out side and there was no ambulance. And when I saw the ambulance coming at 1 o'clock, I went inside, and I was telling them that the ambulance is here. I asked them if my baby is okay; they told me that the baby's okay. I told them that the ambulance is out there, but they told me that there's no driver. I am waiting and waiting, and I am pressuring them, and at 2 o'clock when they told me that my baby passed away, they dissapointed me in this. This is my first baby; my wife is very bad right now, and I feel it a lot, honestly, you know. Everybody was waiting for the baby, and I don't know, it hurt me a lot because they could have avoided it. And they didn't do anything."
The death certificate says the child died of Asphyxia due to congestion.
CEO in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Peter Allen today told us that they do not have the results of the post mortem yet but an investigation is ongoing as the Ministry routinely investigates every infant death.
