A number of students were injured - but it could have been much worse this morning when a bus crashed on the western highway in the Cayo district.
Around 6:30 this morning, a Shaw bus traveling from Belmopan to San Ignacio Town - crashed into a mini cargo van. It happened in front of Hot Mama's Pepper Sauce Factory just outside of Georgeville.
At the time of the incident the bus was loaded with daily commuters and students. From what we understand, both vehicles were traveling in the same direction. When nearing the pepper factory, the minivan that was travelling in front of the bus - pulled over to the right hand side of the road. The Bus that was behind then attempted to overtake the van - when suddenly the van swerved to the left toward the factory.
The bus hit the van -and the impact cause the van to overturn twice as the bus slid beside it. Luckily, no one was seriously injured in the accident.
We understand 8 students were transported to the San Ignacio hospital for observation but were released hours later.
The windshield on the badly crushed minivan had to be smashed open to allow the driver and its passenger to get out.
