So, how will hospitals - mainly the KHMH and the Northern Regional - manage this surge in cases- the ill and the critically ill?
Manzanero told us how close the hospitals are to being overwhelmed and what are the contingency plans:
Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
"We have now 12 patients at Karl Huesner Covid unit. Two of those are intubated and two are possible discharges. 12 is the maximum number we have in that specific area. I think we need to stress that. So any other patients that requires to come to Karl Huesner starts to now overflow into different segments of that same layout. It's important that we know that. The northern regional hospital went yesterday morning to having one patient to now having 8. They still have a space of 3. The San Ignacio Community Hospital has 2 patients in isolation and they have 2 beds available. The Corozal Community Hospital has 2 patients hospitalized and they have 4 beds available and the Western Health Region has 2 patients with 4 beds available. Dangriga and Punta Gorda do not have any patients hospitalized with Covid19. Our hospital capacity has not been overwhelmed as yet, but we are close to getting a full bed occupancy that is specific for Covid19. Overwhelmed will be that you dont even have a bed, because as I said you have to move areas of the hospital and convert areas to Covid19. Karl Huesner - the 12 beds are occupied and of course you have 2 discharges and Northern Regional still have 3 more spaces."
