Two members of Staff from Belize's Central Medical Lab have recently returned from a two-week gene sequencing training at Baylor College of Medicine in the United States.
You may remember that one of them, Kaylyn Habet, was ridiculed by her colleagues for nabbing the spot when they put out a press release calling the lab tech with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience a contract worker.
But despite those protestations, Kaylyn Habet and her colleague completed the training and are back in Belize and back at the lab, and yesterday they played host to both Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat and Dr. Kristy Murray, Director of the Center for Human Immunobiology at Baylor College, taking them on a tour of the Belize Central Laboratory. They were there to view donated genomic sequencing equipment used to detect COVID-19 variants in Belize.
It's a donation funded by the U.S. government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that will allow Belize to conduct its own sequencing.
