So with BA.5 in the country, and considering all we know about how deadly COVID can be, is the government thinking about bringing back the restrictions we just got rid of? What about a lockdown?
Here's how the PM responded:
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We're not going to have a lockdown, that's for sure. What the Minister of Health informed the Cabinet, that the new variant, I only remember number 5, that the new variant spreads faster but it's less dangerous and thirdly, the infectious rate is down from five days to between 1 and 3 days and so the Ministry of Health has recommended to Cabinet yesterday to remove all the restrictions that we have. When it comes for instance to the issue of vaccinations, I mean, every adult that has wanted to get vaccinated, could have gotten vaccinated, those that have not is because they simply don't want, and unless we pass a law which will create other problems, we have decided to remove those restrictions and allow Belizeans to leave the country if they're not vaccinated, but the Ministry of Health is going to continue with a very aggressive campaign, mask wearing when necessary, physical distance, washing your hands, and also testing when necessary."
