Carnival Cruise Corporation broke ground in Belize in March of 2005 but since then, the only things that have been broken are the countless deadlines for the commencement of construction. Well, press reports out of Guatemala say that Carnival is now getting ready to break ground there.
The Prensa Libre from last week Friday reports that Carnival has committed to build a US$40 million cruise terminal in Santa Tomas de Castilla. According to the newspaper, the US$40 million project will cover 98,000 cubic metres and will include a thousand meter pier to dock two cruise ships. Carnival executives met with Guatemalan President Oscar Berger last week to outline the plan. The project will hire a thousand workers during construction, which the paper says will start next year.
There's no telling how this dramatic unveiling in a neighboring country bodes for the still fledgling plan for the carnival port in Belize City.
