Newly appointed Guatemalan Foreign Minister Gert Rosenthal made a one-day visit to Belize yesterday. He was accompanied by Antonio Matta Fahsen, the Executive Secretary of the Guatemala-Belize Commission.

An official release and official video would only say and show that they made a courtesy call on the Prime Minister in the Cabinet room. The PM was flanked by Belize's Foreign Minister, Eamon Courtenay, Chief Negotiator Assad Shoman, Foreign Affairs CEO Amalia Mai, and Belize's Ambassador to Guatemala Fred Martinez.

What did they discuss? Well, a government release only referred to it as issues of mutual interest. What we do know is that right now, Rosenthal, a highly respected diplomat, most recently Guatemala's Ambassador to the OAS, is lobbying to garner worldwide support for Guatemala's U.S backed bid to win the rotating seat on the UN Security Council. Belize has made it clear it cannot support its neighbor in that and CARICOM nations, representing 14 votes, have indicated that they will support Belize's position.

Rosenthal also visited the OAS Office at the Adjacency Zone, formerly known as Belize's western border with Guatemala.
