Prime Minister Dean Barrow left the country today for New York where starting tomorrow, he will be representing Belize at a United Nations General Assembly on the world financial and economic crisis and its impact on development. Developing countries are pressing for the UN to become a key player in representing the world's poor who have been hard-hit by the economic meltdown.

Although the meeting has been billed as a summit, international news reports say that no western leaders are expected to attend and only 14 presidents and prime ministers will show up. The other 112 countries taking part will send lower-level delegations.

Still, it’s got star power as the top speakers are to be Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales, both well-known leftists. The Prime Minister will be supported by the charge d’affaires and staff of the permanent mission of Belize to the UN. He will return to Belize on Saturday.
