In regional news, Juan Orlando Hernández, the disgraced former President of Honduras has been sentenced to 45 years in prison and fined $8m US dollars for enabling drug traffickers to use his military and national police force to help ship tons of cocaine into the United States.

The trial happened in the US where was convicted in March - and the sentence was handed down today.

The 55 year old Hernandez says that he was innocent and that he was wrongly and unjustly accused. Hernández is the first former head of state to be found guilty of drug trafficking in the United States since Manuel Noriega was convicted in 1992.

He was arrested at his home in Tegucigalpa three months after leaving office in 2022 and was extradited to the US in April of that year.
