Thirty-year-old Dawn Billary may not have been able to save anything when fire destroyed her home and all of its contents last Sunday morning. But today the mother of three had good reasons to smile. This evening, the Social Security Board presented Billary with a ten thousand dollar check. The money will be used to replace all the furnishings lost. And as we found out, the money could not have come at a better time.
Jacqueline Godwin,
Why did SSB decide to step forward and extend a helping hand to Dawn Billary?
Rhojani Perriot, SSB External Relations Manager
"Well we have a vested interest, our over-arching goal is to contribute to the development of the community and we believe that by doing these small acts of kindness that we do make a great difference in somebody's life."
Jacqueline Godwin,
What touched you guys about the story?
Rhojani Perriot,
"Well I think it is a fact her son actually went back to save the other children. He basically took on the role of that hero and I think that the story of the family just really touched the board so they decided to go ahead and make the contribution. Actually the $10,000 will be used to furnish her new house. I understand that Mr. Fonseca as well as a representative from the Ministry of Housing have donated a house to her so she'll be using the $10,000 to furnish her home."
Dawn Billary, Fire Victim
"In three weeks time they will repair the house for me. So I thank Harvey because that is what he told me. But so far I am still staying at the neighbor's house, I got my little baby."
Jacqueline Godwin,
And how do you feel about the donation from the Social Security Board?
Dawn Billary,
"I don't know how to thank them."
Jacqueline Godwin,
Because you didn't know how you would make it right?
Dawn Billary,
"Well everybody is trying their very best to help me."
Dawn's eldest son Ernest Billary is being hailed a hero after he ran back into the burning building to save his four month old and six year old brothers who fire investigators say would have died in the blaze. But while the teenager is being called a hero his uncle who he was named after, thirty six year old Ernest Billary the elder was arrested on Thursday and charged for arson after he deliberately set fire to the house.
