There’s a reason streets aren’t usually paved in December, and that’s because of the likelihood of rain. That wisdom was amply demonstrated over the past two days when the hot mix paving that had been going so well had to be repeatedly delayed due to the unpredictable rains.

So, the paving has stopped for the time being at a quarter way down Regent Street – which means that the Ministry of Works failed to realize its target of having both Albert and Regent streets fully paved for Christmas. But, after the pothole chaos of the past few months, we don’t see anyone complaining because Albert Street is almost fully paved.

And to sharpen up appearances in time for the Pascua, the Ministry of Works contractors have installed benches and garbage containers all along the new sidewalk. Work started yesterday evening and by noon today all garbages and benches had been put up.

Now for a city regrettably so accustomed to filth and steeped in urban decay, many passers-by commented that the benches in particular seemed a bit too dainty, but we won’t complain – we just hope they’re all here and all intact after the long Christmas Holidays. We’ll let you know if they aren’t.
