The Government of Belize has struck back after an alarming headline article in the AMANDALA last week Friday. AMANDALA'S headline declared that Lufthansa was suing gob for $33 million. Well, government today issued a statement saying that it had no deal with Lufthansa and is not being sued by Lufthansa or any Los Angeles branch of that company.
The government release, refers instead to a deal with a locally registered company called Newco which we reported on last Friday. That's all good and well, but as the AMANDALA'S Associate Editor Adele Ramos has pointed out in her own release to the media, it was a government release in July of 2003 which declaring the new airport privatization deal said that, "government decided to end the previous arrangement with a consortium led by the Lufthansa Consulting Group (LCG), operating out of Los Angeles, California."
Of course, at that time it suited government nicely to throw out the Lufthansa brand name because the Ministry of Investment wanted to create the impression that it had proceeded with due diligence and with credible investors for the privatization of the national airport. Of course, as we have reported, Newco was basically a paper company formed by former Lufthansa executives who had no active connection with the company and just seemed to be out to profiteer on the PGIA deal. When that became all too clear, government ditched Newco and moved unto to the mostly local Belize Airport Concession Company, a decision which is now the source of international arbitration between Newco and GOB. Newco's attorney is the law firm of Glenn D. Godfrey.
