In the 1993 to 1998 term of the UDP, Salvador Fernandez was the bad boy Minister, punished in the PUP press for his excesses, mauled in the media for his misdeeds, but still in the massive swing of 1998, Fernandez lost to Ainslie Leslie by a very small margin - less than 5%. Still, he lost, and the UDP's new leader all but declared him an outcast and Fernandez was relegated to the sidelines and the UDP lost the Cayo North seat in 2003, this time by a fairly large margin. Well, now, Salvador Fernandez is back in Cayo North.

A record turn out of 1,820 voters showed for the divisional convention and Fernandez got 706 votes besting the standard bearer since 2002, Dean Williams, who got 666 votes, while Sergio Chuc got 374 votes while 74 votes were spoilt.

It's not known who Fernandez will face in Cayo North because the division has been split and PUP incumbent Ainslie Leslie is expected to now run in Cayo Northeast, thus denying political observers the certain drama of a showdown between the lions of the west.
