But one man who did see and sign the contract was principal shareholder Denys Barrow and last week he declined to comment on the registry scandal, a comment that could have added greatly to his brother, the opposition leaders' position. So why didn't he give that comment? Today the Leader of the Opposition commented on that.
Jules Vasquez,
What should we make of the fact that you are alleging one thing and he refuses to support your allegation?
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"I don't know if he has refused to support my allegation. He has not come public because he too is in an impossible situation."
Jules Vasquez,
Would you say that your brother holds information which could validate or prove the assertion you have made which is that Minister Godfrey Smith and Eamon Courtenay...
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"Of course he has that information, he knows that they are beneficial owners, that they have proprietary interests in the whole thing, and that they set up the deal. Of course he knows that, he must know that. He is their partner, isn't he."
Jules Vasquez,
So you know it and he knows it?
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"Absolutely."
Jules Vasquez,
You know that from him?
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"I know that because he knows it, absolutely."
Jules Vasquez,
However he refuses, or he declines, to come forward and say that.
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"So far he has declined to come forward and say that is absolutely true. But I am telling you that he has to know, it is obvious, because they were together the people who implemented this idea of Mr. Smith and they were partners, and continued to be partners, until the deal was cancelled. Whether Smith and Courtenay were silent partners or not is hardly material. The fact is that there were the ones there with Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Kaseke who were all in this deal."
Jules Vasquez,
You're saying that Mr. Smith on Friday lied because he is saying that you lied.
Hon. Dean Barrow,
"I am without a doubt saying that he is a shameless, unabashed liar and I am saying that he knows that I know from my brother that he is a partner in the Registry."
For his part, Minister Godfrey Smith has denied beneficial or official ownership.
