Last night, it made headlines when BWS informed the PUC that it was asking for a 8.75% increase in water rates. Well tonight, the news is that Cabinet stepped on the utility, whose board it controls, and made it withdraw that request, right quick.
According to a Cabinet release issued this evening, "Cabinet has told Belize Water Services Limited not to proceed...with its request for a rate review." It continues, "this action assures the Belizean public that there will be no increase in their water bills." So how will BWS meet the shortfall it's projected because on inflation, light bill and interest rate increases? Well, government says it will work with BWS to consider other alternatives.
