Cabinet met today in Belmopan and one of the main issues discussed was the controversial contract that NICH President Dianne Haylock signed with David Gegg and Cruise Solutions Limited. A bold press release issued from the Ministry of Culture says that it was signed in August without approval of the board or knowledge of the Minister. That release was put out on the official government website today - indicating that things are turning.

So what does Cabinet think? Well deliberations are confidential, but our information suggests that Cardona’s hard line against Haylock enjoyed almost full support from Cabinet when it met today. Haylock – we are told – has few friends in Cabinet and even with the Prime Minister as one of them –

the political intuition is that he could hardly go out on a limb and defend her for what’s being called the privatization of an archaeological reserve.

But the missing piece in all this is Haylock. She is out of the country and reports say she will not return until next week. At that time, we are told, she will be given an opportunity to defend the contract and the unilateral approach to it.
