The Toledo Alcalde Association along with the Maya Leaders Alliance are very angry with the government of Belize tonight and particularly their area representative, Juan Coy. They claim that Coy has countenanced a statutory instrument signed by the Attorney General which they claim has deposed the duly elected alcalde of Santa Elena Village and installed an unelected individual to do the job.
According to a release, “the action taken by the Attorney General and Minister Coy is....political interference (and) an assault on the rule of law, basic democratic principles, our traditional system of governance, and the Maya way of life.” They have called for the statutory instrument to be retracted immediately. The Mayas have indicated that they intend to protest at the installation of the alcalde which should be tomorrow in Punta Gorda Town.
When we reached a senior staffer in the in the Prime Minister’s office, she told us it was all a misunderstanding and that coy would call us to clear it up. We’re still waiting on his call.
