Mayor Zenaida Moya was swept into office in a massive landslide three years ago – and today was her last official day as Mayor of Belize City. So tonight she is “mayoral candidate” Zenaida Moya. But despite three years of internal strife and rivalries – Moya is still riding a wave of popularity which she believes will be enough to secure a repeat victory. She led a motorcade through the city’s streets this evening and before that she told us why she’s so confident she’ll be back in office on Thursday.

Zenaida Moya, Incumbent Mayoral Candidate
“As I told you and I have said it before, that challenges for some reason make me stronger and that was just another challenge and I am still strong. I am ready for tomorrow, I am looking forward to tomorrow. I am looking forward to a victory with my team so it hasn’t affected it.”

Keith Swift,
But do you think any of the allegations will affect public perception and take votes away from you?

Zenaida Moya,
“Well I can’t say it won’t affect some persons. I believe though that the majority of persons are still going to come out and at the end of the day, they’ve seen what my council and myself, we’ve done despite the challenges during our term and they see progress. And so I believe a majority of persons will go out there, they believe in us and they believe in our party, and they are going to go out there and support us.”

Keith Swift,
And you’ll be the Mayor still on Thursday?

Zenaida Moya,
“Oh yes definitely. Thursday I’ll be back in Mayor of Belize City and continuing the work of the residents of Belize City.”

We tried to talk to PUP Mayoral candidate Chubby Reneau but he was out campaigning and we were told he was no longer granting interviews to the media. But when we bumped into him out on the street, he declined comment.
