The Chairman of the PUP Marshalls – it’s not the most prestigious post in PUP officialdom but who controls that post also gets a valuable seat on the party’s executive. So that’s why some attention was paid to the election of a new Chairman on Sunday when the contest was between Cecil Chubby Reneau – who is an ardent John Briceno supporter and Lenny Jo Usher who is George Price’s niece and considered an old guard hawk.
So, it was a minor contest for major chips between the old and new guards and Briceno threw his support completely behind Reneau. And it worked, at the election on Sunday morning, Reneau was elected with 43 votes, while Usher had 36.
But it’s nothing for Briceno’s troops to cheer about. With full, active support from the party leader, observers agree that Reneau’s win should have been by more than a slight 7 votes – an indication that there are still very live rivalries within the grand old party. As head of the marshals, Reneau takes over from his aptly named predecessor, Marshall Nunez.
