For over a week now, we've been reporting on the heated convention race in Caribbean Shores. And every night, it seems the story line changes. Tonight, it has changed again and dramatically so. The man perceived as the frontrunner, Mike Singh has announced he is stepping aside; he will no longer offer himself as Standard Bearer.
Like we said, a huge development: Singh, after all, had the endorsement of the incumbent area representative Carlos Perdomo and his committee.
Singh declined an on-camera interview, but spoke to us by phone where he confirmed that he has withdrawn his candidacy but would not discussion the reasons why. He told us it is a personal decision but did allude to the fact that, quote, "the dynamics have changed."
Indeed they have; a lot changed when the Prime Minister's wife, Kim Barrow came out and endorsed Chandra Nisbet Cansino on 7news last night.
But speaking to us today, Singh didn't point to that surprising appearance or the Nisbet-Cansino candidacy. When we asked him if he will throw his support behind anyone, he said he will make a determination on that next week. As for the Caribbean Shores Committee, Singh said individual members will decide who to support. Well, Santino Castillo today hinted that some of those committee members are already coming his way on their own. He had no comment on Singh stepping down, except to say that for him, it's business as usual and added that it doesn't matter if Mike Singh stayed in or if ten other candidates joined the race.
Right now through, there are only two others and both Chandra Nisbet Cansino and Ann Marie Williams declined comment on Singh's departure.
But by Monday there could be one more. Yes, we this evening spoke to Steven Heusner - a committed campaigner for Perdomo and he told us that he is weighing his options and will make a decision by next week. The deadline for prospective candidate is Wednesday and it's clear that between now and then, anything can happen. We'll keep you posted.
