But, as viewers are aware, this will be yet another election taking place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Belize is starting to see some progress in the number of infections, and so, if the voting public doesn't take the necessary precautions, it could turn into a super-spreader event.
And while the voters must be careful, the politicians seeking elected office in local government are also at risk.
7News has received reliable reports that 2 members of the Belize City Council have contracted the virus. So today, we asked the Prime Minister about the COVID risks, given that he and 5 elected Area Reps contracted the virus after the General Elections - and one fo them died. Here's how he answered that one:
Daniel Ortiz- Reporter
"We understand that a current group of councilor candidates have also contracted the virus as well. What are your thoughts given that elections brings a lot of risk and creates the conditions for super spreader events?"
Hon. John Briceno- Prime Minister
"It is something that we have to deal with. As always we have to learn to live with this virus and I don't say it lightly. Too many people have lost their lives due to Covid19. But this is democracy and we have to elect new councilors and new mayors. I know some people were talking about postponing the election. It is almost damned if you do, damned if you don't. If we've said we are going to postpone it until next year you would have heard people say: oh you want to become dictators so you don't want to have an election. And I can hear the opposition say: oh you are afraid of meeting the people. So now that we are doing it you are saying: oh you shouldn't do it because of Covid. So, what is important, in my mind, is that as long as you are doing what is right. And I believe we are doing what is right. It is time to elect new leaders, new councilors, new mayors and that is what we are going to do. We just have to do it as safely as possible. Appeal to everyone, to all our citizens, to our candidates when they are out campaigning make sure you do the physical distancing, keep on your mask, clean your hands, we just have to be careful. Once we are careful we are going to be okay. Then when we have the elections, the same way as what we did in the elections. In the last elections, I don't think that the super spread was because of the election, it was already coming. When you look at the numbers we were going up. It just so happens that we had an election during that upswing."
