If you've been on social media today, then you've seen the storm of comments condemning PM Briceno for his explanation when asked about nepotism in his new administration. He referred to a limited pool of talent that he said exists in Belize, making it difficult to choose qualified persons for government appointments.

The PM was plainspoken, and the posting public has been stinging in its rebuke. Many people noted that one of the reasons Belize has high instances of brain drain is because even though the persons may be qualified, chances are those with familial connections would be chosen above them. Other say, this is not the best incentive to return home after studying abroad.

Today, the media asked Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde if the PM was justified in saying this. But he said, he never heard the comment.

Hon. Cordel Hyde - Deputy Prime Minister "You heard the Prime Minister say that, Polo? I neva hear the Prime Minister say that."

Reporter "You didn't hear?"

Hon. Cordel Hyde "No, I'm not hearing that and I don't think anybody can compare to what the UDP did in this country, the raping that took place and the predator reactions that took place by friends and families of the last government. That's not what we're about in the People's United Party, we're about doing things differently and yes you've had instances where family members have been appointed to boards and so forth but I think that the prime minister really said at least I'm sure he said is that those persons who were appointed are capable of fulfilling their duties and doing it in an honest and transparent manner and I think that's what we want from people."
