And while the BSCFA chastised BBN, their sister associations, The Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers Association and the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association, thanked the Senate for voting down the Briceno Government's Sugar Industry (Amendment) Bill of 2021.
That's the draft legislation that proposes to give the Minister of Agriculture a very important jurisdiction into the affairs of the 4 Cane Farming Associations.
Well, when the bill went to the Senate on Monday, the opposition and the social partner representatives opposed it.
Progressive and the CSCPA thanked them in a press release, which says quote, "We express our profound gratitude to all those Senators whose vote today prevented the passage of the proposed Amendment to the Sugar Industry Act. That amendment would have had dire implications for the freedom of Cane Farmer Associations to manage their own affairs and also concentrated too much discretion in any Ministry of Agriculture to resolve disputes. …The sugar industry and the Belizean investment climate have benefited greatly from your firm, principled and reasoned stance." End quote.
