Two weeks ago, we told you that the Port of Belize Limited was gearing up to sue the Christian Workers Union for what the company calls an "illegal strike." Well tonight, we can tell you that that claim has been filed in the courts - and the Port of Belize is claiming special damages of 1.034 million dollars along with costs and other relief as the court may deem fit.
According to the claim form, the illegal strike unlawfully prevented PBL from loading and unloading cargo containers for a period of eight days, causing substantial economic loss. The form lists out 7 defendants, including CWU president, Evan "Mose" Hyde, and other members of the union that participated in the strike.
PBL says it suffered financial losses arising directly from the Defendants' illegal strike.
This suit comes only a week after the government agreed to compensate the stevedores 1.5 million dollars for damages sustained during the privatization of the port.
