And another matter that was debated in the House today was a motion on the appointment of a person to act as auditor-general. The government proposed bringing back the former auditor general, Dorothy Bradley, for two years, starting on September 1st.
However, yesterday, you heard the PSU president lament that Bradley did not enjoy the respect of those in the audit department, and that they often felt victimized under her tenure. In fact, they were strongly against her re-appointment.
And it's precisely those points that the Leader of the Opposition brought out when he spoke out against the motion.
Hon. Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

"I have to point out to the honourable house and to Belizeans that the president of the public service union vehemently objects to Miss Bradley being given another contract on the basis that there are many qualified public officers that can assume that position and qualified Belizeans outside of the public service and further the president of the PSU does not paint the picture that the prime minister paints. If fact he says that Mrs. Bradley's tenure was filled with grievances and that she did a terrible job as auditor general and there are many outstanding grievances from her time that disenfranchise public officers, so the opposition cannot support this. I believe this is a lazy approach by the government, buckle down, find a suitable auditor general and proceed. I would hope that you'd take into consideration the president of the Public Service Union's position and I've heard similar complaints from other related parties, so the opposition cannot support this motion."
