And while Peyrefitte stressed that only the commissioner can issue, sign off on and revoke gun licenses, he suggested that perhaps it is time for that sole domain to be re-visited:

"I think the time has come for it to not be left to just the commissioner of police to grant a gun license. I think we need a gun license authority or something to that effect where you could have at least about 5 people who sit on a panel and they determine whether or not an individual should be granted a gun license. Private sector representative, maybe a magistrate. At the very least it also protects whoever is the commissioner, because then that person can say it wasn't their decision alone to determine that."
